big news for south carolina's state employees. lawmakers said today they're launching an effort to provide state workers with a five per cent pay raise. the plan has bipartisan support and being led by republican senator john courson and democratic senator darrell jackson. their proposal covers employees at state agencies as well as colleges---and if approved would take effect july 1st. courson says the pay raise would cost the state $75 million dollars. but he says the state has such a large budget surplus, the raise can be provided without the need for a tax increase. there are currently about 33 thousand state employees. they've had pay raises in only two of the last seven years. three tickets hit the jackpot in the powerball drawing but who is holding those tickets? jennifer bjorklund spent the night at an all night party at a chino hills 7-eleven, where one of the tickets was sold. :10 :23 natural sound "chino hills, chino hills.... from the coveted south carolina republican primary. we are less than ten months away from election day, and just a few weeks away from the coveted south carolina republican primary. so now, more than ever, gloves are expected to come off on the debate stage. seven candidates have been invited to tonight's primetime debate. donald trump, ted cruz, marco rubio, ben carson, jeb bush, chris christie and john kasich all taking the stage. organizers are expecting more than 4-thousand people at the north charleston coliseum. the chairman of the south carolina republican party says they had more than 25-thousand individual requests for just 200 public tickets. the remaining 4,000 tickets were

doors for the event are open at 6:30 and the event starts at 7. our billie jean shaw will be there live and will have more from the event at south carolina state. columbia police say they've made an arrest in connection to a deadly shooting that happened last friday. 23-year-old michael robinson has been charged with murder in the death of rodney francis. officers say robinson fired shots from his suv as francis was leaving club rue 77 on lady street. they say the shooting may have stemmed from a fight between two groups of people. robinson is currently at the alvin s. glenn detention center. a saluda county town clerk has been charged with embezzlement. sled reports that 63 year old ellen pamela long has been arrested. she used to be the town clerk in the town of ward. she's accused of stealing from the town and from a community church. she's charged with embezzlement of public funds of more than ten thousand dollars and breach of public trust as well as forgery. all of the charges are felonies. if she's convicted, she could get up to 10 years in prison.

people in a richland county kidnapping and armed investigators say the two forced a man walking down broad river road into a vehicle at gunpoint. they then drove to tyeu trail and bakersfield road, where they left the victim after they beat him and robbed him. the victim was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injures. call crimestoppers at 1- 888-crime-sc if you have information. happening today ... fort jackson will welcome its new command sergeant major. command sergeant major lamont christian will take responsibility as the most senior enlisted officer from outgoing command sergeant major william hain. the ceremony is scheduled for 2 today at the solomon center. christian previously served as the commandant of the drill sergeant academy at fort jackson. also happening today ... a group of politicians and legal experts will discuss education and social equality ahead of monday's event for martin luther king day. a panel discussion featuring former south carolina chief justice jean toal, state representative mia mcleod, former columbia mayor bob coble and law

will meet at 6 tonight in the university of south carolina's school of law auditorium. the event is sponsored by the black law students association and is free and open to the public. some prime real estate in columbia could get the final green light for new development today. plans for the old kline iron and steel company property will go before the city design commission. a greenville developer wants to build about 300 housing units, retail stores, restaurants, and a parking garage in that area. another addition would be a traffic light connecting pedestrians and cars from lady street into the future site. the meeting is at 4 o'clock. if you drove down killian road in northeast columbia today - you may have experienced some added traffic congestion. a new chick-fil-a restaurant opened its doors, offering free chick-fil-a food for a year to its first 100 customers - that's more than 32- thousand dollars in food. in addition to free food, the restaurant also held a children's book drive. those books will be donated to

elementary school -- a part of chick-fil-a's dedication to enriching education. the new restaurant is expected to bring more than 85 jobs to the area. we are continuing coverage in west columbia as the developer behind a big proposed project is offering more particulars and may be winning some people over. last night, neighbors hosted the developer of the planned "brookland" project in a meeting intended to answer questions and clear up rumors. the potential mixed-use development, just over the gervais street bridge will feature homes, specialty stores, and places to eat. the developer says they're not building skyscrapers, and addressed traffic flow and parking. "parking is of upmost concern to us as well. if we don't park it right, people won't live there, people won't work there, people won't shop there." there will be a special- called council meeting tonight as well. the developer says he and his team will be available to answer questions from council during that meeting. by the way, gregg pinner, president of the greater

remember the snake that was stolen from a portland, oregon pet shop? well, he's back. this black pastel ball python is back at a-to-z pets where he belongs. you remember this video... the thief reaches in, grabs the snake and stuffs it down his pants - then walks out of the store. according to richard bjugan, owner of a-to-z pets, someone showed up wednesday morning with the stolen snake. bjugan believes getting the video out on social media made the difference.
